Survey on monitoring results

Summary

The crucial feature of a minimum level of reliability of wastewater treatment is the free wastewater flow passing the primary treatment (primary treatment independent from energy supply and failures of electrical/mechanical equipment). Additional reliability of the treatment performance is achieved by biofilm systems with free flow (compare Geraer Refuge: 75 % COD-elimination despite a break-down of the energy supply and consequently no recirculation for 3 weeks in the season 2001). Generally most of the failures in performance and problems in operation of the monitored treatment plants have been occured due to troubles in the energy supply: faulty inverter at the Karlsbad Refuge, defective charger at the Nördlingen Refuge, destroyed solar collector at the H.v.Barth Refuge, “energy-competition” between kitchen and WWTP at the Magdeburg and the Brandenburg Refuge.

The installation of an autarkic energy supply system exclusively for the operation of the WWTP causes additional chances of defects and maintenance failures. On the other hand an integration of the WWTP into the total energy concept of the refuge means a competition with other energy consumers.

Frequent failures in the operation of the monitored activated sludge systems have been caused by the pressure-sensitivity of the applied linear-compressors. Therefore at WWTPs with water depths well above 2 meters the compressors had to be replaced. Some activated sludge systems showed problems in holding a sufficient high sludge concentration. A careful adjustment of the operation cycle (time control) and the mechanical equipment was required. Carbonate dosing promises additional improvements (compare chapter about specific issues).
